How to Save Yourself Trouble Shooting on Lagos Roads

The energy is unmatched, the backdrops are incredible, and there is no city that looks quite like it on camera. But shooting on Lagos roads as a small creator comes with its own set of problems that no film school will prepare you for. Here is what we have learned the hard way.

Go early or go home

If your shot requires any kind of control over the environment, you need to be out before 7am. The roads are quieter, the light is softer, and people are generally less in your business. By 9am Lagos is fully awake and your window is gone. Plan your schedule around the city, not your comfort.

Scout the location before shoot day

Never show up to a location for the first time on the day of the shoot. What looks good in a photo can be completely different in person. Check the direction of the light at the time you plan to shoot. Look for things that will ruin your shot: generators, roadside traders, overhead wires, hawkers. Lagos locations change constantly. What was clear last week may have a new building going up today.

Know who controls the street

This is the one most creators skip and regret. Every area in Lagos has someone who considers themselves in charge of it, whether that is a landlord, a union, a local government agent or just someone who has been there long enough to feel ownership. Find out who that is before you set up. A small introduction and sometimes a small settlement saves you from having your shoot shut down an hour in.

Travel light and move fast

A large crew and a lot of equipment on a Lagos road will attract attention, and not always the kind you want. The smaller your footprint, the easier it is to work. Two or three people with a camera, a gimbal, and a reflector can get shots that a full crew would take three times as long to capture. Know what you need and cut everything else.

Have a backup location

Things fall through in Lagos regularly. Traffic reroutes, road closures, unexpected events. Always have a second location in mind so if the first one does not work out on the day, you are not scrambling. Ten minutes of planning before the shoot saves two hours of panic on the day.

Do not ignore sound

Lagos is loud. Generators, traffic, market noise, music from shops. If your shoot requires clean audio, plan for it properly. Scout for quieter windows in the day, use a directional mic, and consider doing a location recording beforehand so you know what you are working with in post.

Keep your paperwork close

If you are shooting anything that looks professional, someone will ask you for permission documents at some point. Even if you do not have an official permit, having some form of paperwork, a letter, a production brief, anything that looks official, can diffuse a situation quickly. It signals that you are a legitimate operation, not someone causing trouble.

Expect the unexpected and build it into your schedule

Budget extra time for everything. Traffic to the location, setting up, handling interruptions, packing down. If you plan for a four-hour shoot, assume it will take six. Lagos rewards flexibility and punishes rigid schedules.
